If you live in the South, summer can make exercise challenging. By mid-morning, the combination of heat and humidity can leave even the most motivated person wanting to stay inside. But staying active doesn’t mean you have to power through a workout in 100-degree weather.

After age 50, regular movement becomes even more important. Exercise helps preserve muscle mass, supports healthy weight, improves balance and mobility, boosts energy, and promotes healthy aging and longevity. The key is finding ways to move that work with the season you’re in.

    Walk Early or Walk Late

If you enjoy walking, consider heading out first thing in the morning or waiting until the sun begins to set. Temperatures are often significantly cooler, making it easier and safer to exercise outdoors.

    Bring Your Workout Indoors

Some days are simply too hot to be outside for long periods. That’s okay. Your living room can become your gym. Try an online cardio workout, march in place during commercials, dance to your favorite songs, or do a short strength-training routine with dumbbells or resistance bands.

Remember, a workout doesn’t have to be long to be beneficial. Even 10 to 20 minutes of movement can make a difference.

    Move More Throughout the Day

Not every day has to include a formal workout. In fact, one of the best healthy habits is simply sitting less and moving more.

Set a timer and stand up every 30 to 60 minutes. Stretch, walk around the house, do a few calf raises at the kitchen counter, practice sit-to-stands from a chair, or march in place for a minute or two. These small movement breaks can add up over the course of the day.

    Stay Safe in the Heat

When exercising during the summer, don’t forget to:

    • Drink plenty of water.
    • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
    • Avoid the hottest part of the day.
    • Listen to your body and slow down if you feel dizzy, fatigued, or overheated.

    Keep It Simple

Summer fitness doesn’t have to look perfect. Some days it may be an early morning walk. Other days it may be a few minutes of stretching and movement breaks throughout the day.

The goal is simple: keep moving. Consistent movement supports your strength, energy, independence, and ability to age well. Every step counts, even on the hottest days of summer.

It’s never too late to start taking care of your health.
