What’s the Secret to Living Well at 90?

I’m on a mission to find out — right here in Beaufort.

Have you ever met someone in their 90s who just seems to have figured something out?

Maybe they’re still living independently, getting out into the community, keeping up with friends, or finding joy in the little things. Maybe they have a wonderful sense of humor, a sharp mind, or a story that makes you want to sit down and listen for hours.

I’ve always been fascinated by healthy aging. Not just how long we live, but how well we live along the way.

And lately, I’ve been thinking about the people right here in our own community who might have a thing or two to teach us.

    Introducing the Beaufort Longevity Project

Here’s an idea I’ve been wanting to bring to life: I want to interview men and women in Beaufort who are 90 or older and are living independently and doing well.

I want to hear their stories.

What have their lives looked like? What have they learned along the way? What role have family, friendships, faith, purpose, food, movement, and community played in their lives?

Did they always take care of their health, or did that change over time? What challenges have they faced? What brings them joy today?

I’m not looking for a magic formula or a perfect lifestyle. I’m curious about the real people behind the years — their experiences, their wisdom, and the things that have helped them build a life they love.

Because I suspect we have a lot to learn from them.

What if the answers are closer than we think?

We hear so much about longevity these days. There’s research on nutrition, exercise, sleep, genetics, and all the latest strategies for living longer.

That research matters. But I also think there’s something special about sitting across from someone who has actually lived nine decades or more and asking, “What do you think has made a difference in your life?”

    Their answers might surprise us.

Perhaps we’ll hear about the importance of staying connected to others. Perhaps we’ll hear about resilience, a sense of humor, meaningful work, or simply having a reason to get up in the morning.

Every story will be different, and that’s part of what makes this so interesting.

My hope is to preserve these stories, celebrate the people who share them, and discover what their experiences might teach the rest of us about living well at every age.

    I need your help!

This is where you come in.

Do you know someone in Beaufort who is 90 or older, living independently, and enjoying life? Perhaps it’s a neighbor, a friend from church, a family member, or someone you see around town.

I’d love to hear about them!

If someone comes to mind, please reach out and tell me a little about them. With their permission, I’d love to explore the possibility of interviewing them for the Beaufort Longevity Project.

Let’s celebrate the people in our community who remind us that growing older can be about so much more than adding years to our lives.

It’s about continuing to live them.
