You’re sitting in your doctor’s office.

Maybe it’s your annual physical. Maybe you went in because you’re tired, your bloodwork isn’t quite where you’d like it to be, or you’re noticing some changes in your health as you get older.

Your doctor looks at you and says:

“You really need to exercise more.”

    Or maybe it’s:

    “Try to eat more protein.”

“You need to drink more water.”

“You should work on getting better sleep.”

“You need to lose some weight.”

You nod your head because, honestly, you already know these things are important.

But as you leave the office, you might be thinking:

    How?

How do I actually exercise more when I’m already busy?

How do I eat more protein when I don’t even know how much I need?

How do I get better sleep when I can’t seem to turn my brain off at night?

How do I change habits I’ve had for 20 or 30 years?

    And perhaps the biggest question:

How do I make these changes actually stick?

This is where health coaching can make a difference.

Health Coaching Helps Bridge the Gap Between Knowing and Doing

Most of us don’t need more information about what is healthy.

We already know we should move more, eat nutritious food, sleep well, manage stress and take care of ourselves.

The challenge is turning that knowledge into consistent behavior.

That’s one of the biggest roles of a health coach: helping you change your behavior.

A health coach can help you figure out how to create new healthy habits, let go of old habits that aren’t serving you, and develop realistic strategies that work in your actual life.

Because knowing what to do and doing it are two very different things.

So, What Exactly Does a Health Coach Do?

Health coaching is a collaborative process designed to help you make sustainable changes to your health and wellness.

As a health coach, I don’t simply hand you a list of things you should be doing.

Instead, I help you look at where you are now, where you want to go, what’s getting in the way, and what small steps can move you forward.

    That might mean helping you:

    • Create new healthy habits
    • Break old habits
    • Set realistic and meaningful goals
    • Identify barriers that keep you stuck
    • Turn vague goals into specific actions
    • Develop strategies for busy or stressful seasons
    • Build routines that fit your life
    • Understand your own patterns and triggers
    • Stay accountable
    • Adjust your plan when something isn’t working
    • Build confidence in your ability to make lasting change

And perhaps most importantly, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

A Health Coach Doesn’t Tell You What to Do

    This is an important distinction.

Health coaching isn’t about someone telling you exactly what to eat, how to exercise, or what you need to change.

It’s about helping you find the answers that make sense for you.

As your coach, I can provide education, resources, encouragement and guidance. I’ll ask questions that help you think differently, help you identify obstacles, and help you develop strategies.

But you’re the expert on your own life.

You decide what you want to work on.

You decide which changes are realistic.

And together, we figure out how to turn those intentions into action.

    Accountability Without Judgment

Another important part of health coaching is accountability.

But accountability doesn’t mean someone is waiting to see whether you were “good” or “bad.”

It means having someone in your corner who knows what you’re working toward and helps you follow through.

Maybe you planned to walk three times this week but only walked once.

Instead of beating yourself up, we can ask:

    What got in the way?

Maybe your goal was too ambitious.

    Maybe your schedule changed.

Maybe you didn’t enjoy the activity you chose.

Maybe something else became a priority.

Understanding why something didn’t work gives us valuable information.

Then we can adjust and try again.

    That’s behavior change.

What Does a Board-Certified Health Coach Mean?

When you’re choosing a health coach, credentials matter.

I am a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).

The NBC-HWC credential is administered by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), which establishes education, training and examination standards for health and wellness coaches.

Board certification means that I have met established education and training requirements and passed a national board examination demonstrating competency in health and wellness coaching.

It also means that my coaching practice follows an established professional coaching framework.

Health coaches do not diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medications, and health coaching does not replace your doctor or other healthcare professionals.

Instead, coaching can help you take the recommendations you’ve received from your healthcare providers and figure out how to incorporate them into your everyday life.

    Health Coaching and Healthy Aging

I especially love the role health coaching can play in healthy aging.

As we get older, the things that support our health become increasingly important: maintaining muscle and strength, eating enough protein and fiber, getting quality sleep, managing stress, staying socially connected and continuing to move our bodies.

But knowing those things doesn’t automatically make them habits.

Maybe you know strength training is important but haven’t been consistent.

Maybe you know you need more protein but don’t know how to fit it into your meals.

Maybe you want to sleep better but your evening routine works against you.

Maybe you’ve spent years putting everyone else’s needs first and aren’t sure how to make yourself a priority.

    That’s where coaching comes in.

We take the big health goals and break them down into small, realistic behaviors you can actually practice.

You Don’t Need to Change Everything at Once

One of the biggest misconceptions about improving your health is that you need to completely overhaul your life.

    You don’t.

In fact, trying to change everything at once is often the reason people end up overwhelmed and eventually give up.

Health coaching focuses on finding the changes that matter most right now.

Maybe your first goal is simply eating a protein-rich breakfast.

Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk after lunch.

Maybe it’s creating a consistent bedtime routine.

Maybe it’s finally making time for strength training twice a week.

Small changes may not feel dramatic, but repeated consistently, they can become habits.

And habits are what create your lifestyle.

Health Coaching Is About Creating a Life You Can Actually Live

Your health isn’t determined by what you do for one week.

It’s shaped by what you do over months and years.

That’s why I don’t believe healthy living should feel like another full-time job.

It should fit into your life.

Health coaching can provide the support, guidance, accountability and tools to help you make changes that are realistic, sustainable and meaningful to you.

Because maybe the problem isn’t that you don’t know what to do.

Maybe you just need some help figuring out how to do it.

And that’s exactly what health coaching is designed to help you do.
