And A Trip Down Memory Lane
As I write this, it’s the end of July.
It’s funny how certain times of year can transport you right back to another season of your life.
I haven’t taught elementary school in almost ten years, but the end of July still takes me back to those quiet afternoons spent in my classroom before teachers officially returned.
I’d unlock my classroom, turn on the lights, and begin getting everything ready for a new school year.
I’d arrange desks, organize bookshelves, fill cups with freshly sharpened pencils, and tackle the bulletin boards. I have to admit, decorating them was never one of my strengths. No matter how much inspiration I found, they never quite looked the way I imagined. Thankfully, my students didn’t seem to care.
Then I’d think through all of the fun first-day activities that would help my students get to know one another.
There was always something exciting about a fresh start.
The Secret to a Successful School Year
Those first few weeks of school always looked a little chaotic.
We practiced everything.
How to line up before leaving the classroom.
How to walk in the hallway.
Where to put backpacks each morning.
What to do after unpacking.
How to clean up.
How to pack up at the end of the day.
We practiced those routines over and over until they became second nature.
To someone walking past my classroom, it probably looked repetitive.
But there was a purpose.
Once my students knew exactly what to do, they didn’t have to spend mental energy figuring it out. The expectations were clear. Our days flowed more smoothly. There were fewer reminders, fewer interruptions, and fewer behavior issues.
Those simple routines created the foundation for everything else we would accomplish together that year.
Over the years, I’ve realized healthy living works the same way.
We Already Know the Basics
Most of us don’t need another diet.
We don’t need another detox, another supplement, or another wellness trend.
Most of us already know the basics.
- 💧 Drink more water.
- 🍗 Eat enough protein.
- 🥦 Fill your plate with vegetables and fiber.
- 🚶 Move your body every day.
- 💪 Strength train a few times each week.
- 😴 Prioritize sleep.
- 😌 Manage stress.
- ❤️ Spend time with people you enjoy.
The challenge usually isn’t knowing what to do.
It’s turning those healthy choices into routines.
A Client Reminder
I recently finished coaching a couple who reminded me so much of those first weeks of school.
When we first started working together, healthy living required constant decisions.
“What should we eat tonight?”
“When are we going to exercise?”
“How do we fit this into our schedule?”
Instead of searching for the next perfect meal plan or workout, we focused on creating routines that fit their lives.
She developed a simple morning routine. Before her morning coffee, she drank a glass of water and completed her daily push-ups. It energized her day, and before long she wasn’t relying on motivation anymore. It simply became how she started her morning.
Together, they started eating healthier meals, kept fewer snack foods in the house, and built regular movement into their days and weeks.
Little by little, healthy choices stopped feeling like something they had to think about.
They simply became part of everyday life.
Then summer came.
One week, they were completely out of their normal routine. They traveled, ate differently, and exercised less.
What happened next made me smile.
They couldn’t wait to get home.
Not because they felt guilty.
Not because they thought they needed to “make up” for vacation.
They genuinely missed eating nourishing food.
They missed moving their bodies.
They missed how good their routines made them feel.
That’s when I knew these weren’t temporary habits anymore.
They had become part of who they were.
That’s the Power of Routines
Healthy routines don’t keep us from enjoying vacations, birthdays, holidays, or weekends with family and friends.
In fact, they make those moments easier to enjoy because you know you’ll come back to the habits that help you feel your best.
When healthy habits become your normal, getting back on track doesn’t feel like starting over.
It simply feels like getting back to your routine.
As August begins and many of us settle into a new season, maybe this is the perfect time to focus on one small routine instead of one big goal.
Maybe it’s drinking a glass of water before your morning coffee.
Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk after dinner.
Maybe it’s strength training twice a week.
Whatever it is, keep it simple.
Because lasting health isn’t built through willpower.
It’s built through routines.
And those routines make healthy choices easier—not just this week, but for years to come.
