When most people think about wellness, they picture exercise, drinking more water, or getting better sleep. Those habits absolutely matter, but there’s one nutrition habit that often gets overlooked: fiber.
You’ve probably heard the recommendation to eat about 30 grams of fiber each day. While that’s a helpful guideline, I recently heard an idea on The Model Health Show that I think is even more practical.
Instead of counting grams, aim to eat 30 different sources of fiber each week.
Think of it like creating a colorful collection of foods instead of chasing a number.
Why Variety Matters
Different plant foods contain different types of fiber, and each one feeds different beneficial bacteria in your gut.
Your gut is home to trillions of microbes that influence far more than digestion. Research continues to show that a healthy gut plays an important role in:
- Immune function
- Brain health
- Blood sugar regulation
- Heart health
- Weight management
- Healthy aging
- Reducing inflammation
The more variety you give those microbes, the more diverse and resilient your gut microbiome becomes.
What Counts as a Fiber Source?
You might be surprised how quickly the list grows.
Some examples include:
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Pears
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Carrots
- Spinach
- Kale
- Sweet potatoes
- Black beans
- Lentils
- Chickpeas
- Oats
- Quinoa
- Brown rice
- Chia seeds
- Flaxseed
- Pumpkin seeds
- Walnuts
- Almonds
- Pistachios
- Pecans
- Avocado
- Edamame
- Mushrooms
- Bell peppers
- Cabbage
- Raspberries
- Asparagus
Notice that these foods come from many different categories—not just fruits and vegetables but also legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
Remember: There Is No Perfect List
One of the things I appreciated most about this concept is that everyone is different.
Some people thrive with beans. Others don’t tolerate them well.
Some feel great eating oats, while others choose gluten-free grains.
The goal isn’t to force yourself to eat foods that don’t agree with your body. Instead, use this as an invitation to explore more variety within the foods that do make you feel your best.
Wellness is personal. What nourishes one person may not be the right choice for someone else.
The Benefits Go Beyond Digestion
Fiber is often associated with staying regular, but that’s only one of its many benefits.
Getting enough fiber may help:
- Keep you feeling full longer
- Support healthy cholesterol levels
- Promote more stable blood sugar
- Feed beneficial gut bacteria
- Reduce inflammation
- Support heart health
- Encourage healthy weight management
- Lower the risk of several chronic diseases
For women in midlife and beyond, fiber can be especially helpful for supporting energy levels, metabolic health, and overall longevity.
A Wellness Challenge
This week, instead of worrying about hitting an exact number of grams, start a simple list.
How many different fiber-rich foods can you eat over the next seven days?
Maybe you reach 18.
Maybe you get to 24.
Maybe you hit all 30.
Wherever you land, you’ve likely eaten a more colorful, nutrient-rich diet than you would have otherwise.
Small, consistent choices are what create lasting wellness—not perfection.
If you’re looking for a realistic approach to healthy eating that fits your lifestyle, I’d love to help. Together, we can build sustainable habits that support your energy, longevity, and overall wellness—one simple step at a time.
